Pilot caused crash due to professional negligence

It has been revealed that an RAF pilot crashed a puma helicopter, killing himself and two colleagues, as he tried to perform flying stunts that were beyond his capability. The Flight Lieutenant died along with an RAF Sergeant and an Army Private, when the £20 million aircraft they were in, crashed into woods. The Flt Lt committed professional negligence when he broke the rules by flying too low and threw the aircraft around “like a toy” before it plummeted near Catterick barracks, North Yorks, an inquest heard. At one point, he shouted “Let’s scare the s*** out of this taxi” as she saw a cab driver stop to watch his performance. The crew were also playing loud music through the speaker system and shouted slogans from the blockbuster film ‘Top Gun.’ When common sense flew away Last month, coroner Geoffrey Fell, speaking at Harrogate Magistrates’ Court, identified a catalogue of shocking blunders which led to the crash in August 2007. A report into the accident showed that passengers had been sitting in the wrong areas, equipment on board was not properly stored and some recruits were not wearing helmets. He stated: “While some of the factors individually might not lead to a hazardous situation, collectively they are almost certainly leading to a mishap. “The pilot of the helicopter was attempting a flying manoeuvre which was beyond his capabilities, or those of the Puma, or a combination of both. “Against a background of deteriorating administration, airmanship and discipline, the helicopter crashed.” Recording a narrative verdict, Mr Fell noted the helicopter training exercise left people on the ground terrified. As a result, Mr Fell noted that the Ministry of Defence were also negligent, because of “defects” that contributed to the accident and pointed out that official records were “altered or went missing.” However, retired Wing Commander Duncan Trapp, the crew's commanding officer at RAF Benson at the time, told the inquest that the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan had reduced the number of instructors, with at times only four out of 13 instructors available, making training accidents more likley. A caravan park owner even called the police when he saw the antics, as the pilot was “flying like an idiot,” witnesses said. Nine other people were on board the helicopter, but escaped with serious personal injuries. The family of the 17-yearold private killed in the crash stated: “All his family are still devastated at his untimely and early death. We feel it is not an accident and we hope that lessons have been learnt.” Group Captain Jonathan Burr, the new head of RAF Benson, told the inquest: “Lessons of this inquest have been fully addressed. “We have changed the way that we supervise, manage and task our Puma operations, both at home and overseas, to ensure that such events are not repeated.” Although North Yorkshire Police investigated whether the tragedy amounted to manslaughter or gross negligence, no charges have been brought.
